Type: Two incised and glazed, plastic clay tiles.


Description: 2 tiles incised with armorial devices and with maker's  marks and stabbed holes to the verso. 

 

Design: The arms of the Earls of Brownlow and Bridgewater. In 1853 the 2nd Earl Brownlow, had inherited the additional title of Earl of Bridgewater from his grandfather, John Egerton, 7th Earl of Bridgewater and in 1863, by royal licence, the titles were combined. The 2nd Earl Brownlow died young in 1867 and was succeeded by his younger brother Adelbert Wellington Brownlow-Cust, Of interest is that Adelbert married Lady Adelaide Chetwynd-Talbot - who was painted by Frederick Leighton.

 

Colours: Brown.

 

Dimensions: 6" x 5" x 5/8" (150 mm x 150 mm x 18 mm).

 

Condition: Good - some surface marks (see photos).
